BMW has outsold Tesla in the European electric vehicle market, with the German automaker delivering 14,869 new electric vehicles in Europe last month, 308 more than Tesla.
For the first time, BMW has sold more electric vehicles in Europe than Tesla. With July's figures out, BMW sold 14,869 new electric vehicles in Europe last month, according to analytics firm JATO Dynamics. Tesla sold 14,561 new electric vehicles in July.
This means BMW sold 308 more EVs than Tesla, a fairly small margin, but it shows that the German automaker has quietly become a power hitter in the electric vehicle world, while still offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid and gasoline options.
According to JATO Dynamics, Tesla performed somewhat poorly in Europe last month, with registrations of both the Model Y and Model 3 falling. Model Y sales fell 16% to 9,544 units, while Model 3 sales were down 17% to 4,694 units. This decline meant that BMW Group narrowly took the lead in European EV sales in July.
Nevertheless, European EV sales were down 6% year-on-year in July, a decline that JATO Dynamics attributes to a lack of government incentives and concerns about resale prices.
But despite BMW Group's overall victory, the best-selling EV in Europe last month was still the Model Y, by a large margin, with 9,544 units sold. The second best-selling EV in Europe in July was the Volvo EX30 with 6,573 units sold, followed by the Volkswagen ID.4 with 5,295 units sold.
Two BMWs made it into the top 10 list, the iX1 with 4,305 and the i4 with 4,198.
Jato Dynamics points out that the overall European market will grow by 2% compared to July 2023, to 1.03 million units, with 54% of sales being SUVs.
Commenting on the rise in SUV sales, Felipe Munoz, analyst at JATO Dynamics, said: “European consumers have more choice than ever before, making SUVs a more comfortable and attractive option for many. This, combined with the rise in affordable models, is encouraging consumers to switch from traditional segments to SUVs.”
The Tesla Model Y was Europe's best-selling EV in July, but it was nowhere near the top-selling model overall, the Dacia Sandero, with 22,398 units. Following the Sandero were the Volkswagen T-Roc with 19,254 units and the Toyota Yaris Cross with 17,314 units.
