Austria, Hungary, Greece and Italy have been particularly affected by natural forces in recent times.
Heat waves, wildfires and even volcanic eruptions could cause hardship for residents and disruption for tourists.
These are unprecedented situations, which even led to the brief closure of the Parthenon earlier this year.
Temperatures in parts of Europe have reached as high as 104 degrees. Austria and Hungary have been particularly hard hit, with residents and tourists advised to stay indoors between noon and 4 pm. Outdoor cooling stations have been set up in cities such as Vienna and Budapest.
The situation has been made worse by wildfires in parts of Greece and Italy. The heat and dry weather has forced evacuations in southern Greece, including several tourist destinations on Greece's popular islands. Some sites and accommodation have already been closed, so travellers are advised to check beforehand. People have already been warned to wear masks in case of smoke and ash from the fires.
And there's nothing anyone can do about Europe's most active volcano.
Italy's Mount Etna erupted on August 14, forcing the closure of Catania International Airport in Sicily. The airport has since reopened, but travelers are urged to check with their airline for further disruptions and are also advised to take out travel insurance.
