Approximately 100,000 people die in Poland each year, and more than 1 million people fight the disease. An important factor that affects survival is the moment of diagnosis. The faster cancer is detected, the more likely it is to treat it effectively. Therefore, it is important to identify the initial warning signal.
Sensitivity to detectable cancer during fetal period
Scientists at the U.S. Tierda H. Van Andera Institute show that the risk of developing cancer can be estimated before the birth of a child. The conclusions of their studies, published in the journal Nature Cancer, focus on epigenetic differences – changes in gene expression that are not attributable to mutations.
These processes are important to the body as they can affect the way and time the instructions contained in the DNA are executed. In this respect, irregularity gives the damaged cells an opportunity to survive and expose them. Therefore, they can be related to health problems.

The researchers were able to identify two different epigenetic states that could be detected during the early stages of prenatal development. One of them is a lower risk of cancer, and the other is converted to a higher one. Furthermore, in some cases, when a disease occurs, it is usually in the form of a liquid tumor (such as lymphoma), and in the second it is a solid tumor (such as the attacker’s prostate).
Does Pixabay Medicine detect cancer before birth?
Studies on mice led to these conclusions. Although all controlled mammals had the same genetic code, we found that those with reduced TRIM28 gene levels exhibited a variety of epigenetic patterns affecting their susceptibility to cancer. Importantly, these changes can manifest themselves early in life and increase and reduce the risk of future development.
Oncology breakthrough?
Dr. Ilaria Panzeri, the main author of the study, emphasizes that the disease is often attributable to randomness. However, epigenetic studies suggest that the cause may lie in the prenatal process.
– Our findings show that cancer roots can begin in sensitive periods of development, providing a new perspective on disease testing and potentially new diagnostic and treatment options – emphasis on researchers I’m doing it.

A similar opinion is Dr. J. Andrew Pospisilik, co-author of the work. He points to the findings that research “opens the door to a completely new world” of oncology. Up until now, cancer diagnosis has focused on the later stages of life without carefully analyzing potential causes during prenatal development.
The possibilities are huge. Scientists’ discoveries could contribute to preventive medicine breakthroughs. The ability to identify cancer risk in childhood paves the way for early intervention. This includes regular preventive testing, an adaptive diet, and individually matched epigenetic therapies.
