April 16, 2024 – FLIR, a Teledyne Technologies company, today announced the TrafiBot AI 4K visible camera system for intercity traffic intelligence. This closed-circuit traffic camera offers the most robust artificial intelligence (AI) for the best detection performance and most reliable traffic data collection along intercity roads, from highways to tunnels, without loss of image resolution or data loss due to bandwidth issues.
Trafibot AI leverages two FLIR proprietary AI models developed from millions of FLIR images collected around the world over the past 30 years: one model identifies and classifies falling objects, and the other classifies vehicles, including anomalous objects such as e-scooters and car hauling trucks, and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Combined with FLIR's patented 3D World Tracker, TrafiBot AI is better able to detect incidents within a scene. Once a vehicle is in view, the camera predicts the vehicle's speed and trajectory, even when the tracked target is blocked or obscured by other vehicles, objects, or road infrastructure. TrafiBot AI can also detect sudden lane changes, following vehicles too closely, and wrong-way drivers, providing traffic managers with critical data to better manage safety incidents while reducing false alarms.
“Intelligent traffic management systems have come a long way over the past decade, and now traffic management teams need faster, more accurate traffic data to alert emergency responders, save lives, and get vehicles moving again,” said Stephan Pink, vice president of business development at FLIR. “Trafibot AI delivers on that capability by combining our proprietary AI models, 3D world tracker, and innovative three-axis rotation design that allows for greater installation flexibility when mounting to specialized road infrastructure, such as sloping tunnel walls and tight spaces.”
“FLIR is on the right track by integrating their unique traffic information experience dating back more than 30 years into their AI algorithms, which is unmatched in the industry,” said Gil Marques, president of Tacel Ltd., a leading Canadian supplier of advanced traffic management systems and traffic control equipment. “Competitors have to rely on off-the-shelf and new datasets to build their AI algorithms, which is not as powerful as the approach FLIR is taking.”
Weatherproof housing and flexible installation
The 3-axis camera swivel enables pan, tilt and lateral roll, eliminating the need for time-consuming custom adapter plates, and the internal tilt sensor automatically adjusts, further reducing installation time and traffic disruption.
Trafibot AI is housed in a non-corrosive stainless steel case that is IP 66/67 rated and built to withstand all weather conditions including salt air, humidity and high pressure water jets from road and tunnel cleaning operations. The 4K camera also features 6-22mm optical zoom with a detection range of up to 300 meters, providing greater coverage per camera compared to previous FLIR intelligent traffic cameras for better decision support.
Software Integration
The camera is designed to integrate with FLIR Cascade, a newly launched software product that can collect and organize data from Trafibot AI, and features a state-of-the-art intelligent incident filtering system so that only relevant incidents are displayed to traffic operators. Once an incident is detected, a short 4K resolution video clip of the scene is flagged for immediate review by traffic management teams. Trafibot AI can also be further integrated with video management systems to provide live footage.
