First, the motivation for acquiring Segura is unclear: The Orioles recently lost both Jordan Westberg and Jorge Mateo to injuries, but Segura hasn't played for the organization all season and doesn't seem ready to immediately replace either of them.
Perhaps the Orioles are looking to take a long look at the 34-year-old in the minor leagues to see if he's someone they'd want to bring back in 2025?
It's hard to believe Segura hasn't played anywhere this season, especially since he's only 34 and has built a solid reputation as a player for most of his career. The 12-year veteran has played for the Los Angeles Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies and Miami Marlins, batting .281 with 211 stolen bases and is capable of playing both shortstop and second base.
Segura spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons with Seattle, earning an All-Star selection in the latter season. He was acquired in a trade with the Diamondbacks that sent Mitch Haniger to Seattle and Taijuan Walker and Ketel Marte to Arizona. He was traded to the Phillies before 2019 when the Mariners dismantled and restructured their roster.
