FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Commission on Aug. 6 approved a grant to fund classes to educate older residents about AI technology.
According to county documents, OpenAI's $10,000 grant will be distributed through AARP's Senior Technology Services division and will fund five programs in the county's Department of Senior Services that help seniors learn more about artificial intelligence technology.
Open AI is a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research organization and the creator of the popular chatbot ChatGPT.
The grant money will also be used to improve Wi-Fi at Sexton Hall, Cumming's life improvement facility.
Forsyth County's Department of Senior Services was chosen for the grant because it has offered programs to educate seniors about AI, said Russell Brown, communications director for the county, which also provides AARP's Senior Planet program, which teaches seniors about technology.
The department already offers technical information courses, lectures, groups and workshops, some of which have won national and state awards, he said.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the department offered online programs while senior centers were closed, and this online effort earned staff a 2020 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Outstanding Program Award.
Technology classes offered this summer will cover topics such as understanding smartphones, using Android tablets, using digital tools to search for jobs, recognizing AI and using the music streaming app Spotify.
