François Bayrou appointed as new Prime Minister of France – announced at the Elysée Palace
On Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Francois Bayrou as prime minister and tasked him with forming a government. Bayrou will already become France's third prime minister in 2024. Gabriel Attal previously held the position from January to September this year, before being replaced by Michel Barnier, who resigned after the government failed to secure a motion of no confidence.
According to Reuters, Bayrou is expected to announce his chosen cabinet in the coming days. But the agency noted it could face the same challenges as its predecessor. He said his close relationship with the “unpopular” Mr Macron could also work against him.
The current French president is hopeful that the new prime minister will be able to form and maintain a government at least until July, when new parliamentary elections will be held in France.
François Bayrou is the founder of the Democratic Movement Party, a centrist and socially liberal organization active since 2007. The party supported Emmanuel Macron in the 2017 presidential election.
More details will be provided soon.
