A 37-year-old Polish national is charged with the murder of a German police officer. The man is suspected of driving a car and hitting a police officer. The incident occurred while police were chasing a group of car thieves. As a result, four Polish nationals were detained.
On Tuesday, a police team carried out an operation against a gang of car thieves in Rauchhammer, Brandenburg (approximately 50 km southwest of Cottbus), close to the Polish border. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, a total of four men from Poland, aged between 26 and 37, were arrested, the daily newspaper Bild reported, citing a spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
One of the suspects, a 37-year-old Polish national, was said to be driving a stolen vehicle. While the other suspects were in the convoy, the driver of the stolen car reportedly struck a police officer who was standing near the trunk of his company car. The 32-year-old police officer from Dresden died at the scene.

The public prosecutor’s office in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, has been investigating a group of Polish nationals for possible involvement in a car theft ring, a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office in Cottbus said. According to Bild, authorities have already issued arrest warrants for three Polish nationals known to police in connection with theft, receiving stolen property and other crimes.
The four arrested will appear before a judge at the district court in Senftenberg, Brandenburg, on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the Cottbus public prosecutor’s office said one of the suspects will be charged with “murder to conceal a crime,” Bild newspaper reported. It is not yet clear whether other men may have been indirectly involved in the officer’s murder.

After the policeman’s death, Brandenburg’s interior ministry ordered the flags to be lowered at all police buildings in the canton. “We mourn the loss of a young police officer and his father who died in the line of duty. We express our deepest condolences to his family,” Dietmar Wojdke, the state’s prime minister, said in a statement.
