The man who entered the crowd of people in Mannheim, Germany on Monday is probably mentally ill – the prosecutor’s office told an afternoon press conference. Investigators are not planning a political attack. The incident left two people dead and many injured.
The man intentionally drove the vehicle to attack the victim, as local police reported shortly after the incident.
– During the arrest, the suspect shot the mouth out of fear, but this was confirmed by previous media reports – later the head of the Baden-Württemberg Investigation Office confirmed that the perpetrator was likely to have mental problems.

The driver who caused Monday’s tragedy is currently in the hospital, and his condition is called stable.
He was known to the police and was punished multiple times. For attacks he served a short sentence more than a decade ago and driving under the influence of alcohol.

His final crime was a case of hate speech in 2018 in a Facebook comment, and he received a fine.

The attack in Mannheim took place in the city centre on Monday. The man entered many people and hurt many, including two deaths. The assailant was taken into custody – he is a 40-year-old German citizen who was arrested.
After this tragedy, German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz expressed deep compassion for the victims’ families and thanked emergency services for efficient action.
“We will once again lament Mannheim, and once more, we will lament the families of victims of meaningless violence,” Scholz admits, referring to last year’s assassination, in which officers were killed with a knife.

Candidates for successor Scholz, leader of the Khadecka block of CDU/CSU Friedrich Merz, also won the floor.
“My idea is with the victim and their families. This incident is an urgent reminder, like the terrible act (violence) that has been around since the past few months. We must do everything with our strength to prevent them,” he said on Portal X.
