Google Maps blocked criticism from the Gulf of Mexico after criticizing its decision to label it “Gulf of America” for users in the United States.
The technology giant has updated the name of the location on Wednesday after President Donald Trump ordered that he was changed in official government documents.
By clicking on the gulf label in Google Maps, a note said that “the publication is currently deactivated”.
Google also seems to have deleted some negative opinions following its name change.
The BBC asked for comments from the company.
“Certain types of places are more likely to receive publications, such as opinions, which violate Google policies,” added the label to the States of the Gulf.
“To avoid this, Google disabled the publication.”
The most recent journal that remains for the result of the location on Google Maps now seems to come from a month ago.
Some users claim on social networks that the negative opinions they have published to oppose the change have been deleted and accused Google of “censorship”.
The so-called “bombardment of the journal” has become a popular form of online protest against companies or companies that appear in research results or Google cards.
Tactics have also been deployed to manipulate the notes of an application on the mobile markets.
In 2020, people used it to criticize President Trump’s proposal to ban Tiktok – leaving hundreds of criticism of his re -election campaign application on the Apple App Store.
It was also used by Gametop Traders to retaliate in stock trading applications such as Robinhood which introduced trading restrictions in the mid -market of the 2021 market.
Google says that it takes measures to prevent abuse of its examination mechanisms using automated methods to detect “unusual models” of activity – like a location or a company suddenly in a star review .
He adds that the action may include temporarily disabling contributions to lists or the deletion of “policies violation content” to prevent abuses of its tools or false opinions.
Forbes reported on Thursday that the company had “tacitly admitted” to have deleted criticism criticizing the rebate of the gulf location on the cards.
The BBC asked Google to confirm if it deleted them.
This comes after Google said in a blog article on Monday that American users would see “Gulf of America” replacing the Gulf of Mexico on the cards.
He said it was following a “long -standing policy” to reflect up -to -date name changes in the official sources of the United States government.
The name would remain unchanged in Mexico and the rest of the world would see “Gulf of America” added next to its current name in parentheses, added Google.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, wrote a letter to the company asking them not to rename the Gulf in a letter at the end of January.
Meanwhile, Apple has also changed the names of American users from its own MAP application.
The White House highlighted him in an article on X (formerly Twitter) Wednesday – with an image of Apple cards displaying “Gulf of America” instead of the Gulf of Mexico.
