WALWORTH COUNTY, Wis. – Lake Geneva is experiencing a harmful algal bloom, and residents are being urged to avoid swimming or contact with the water until further notice.
The Walworth County Department of Health and Human Services announced in a Facebook post that all city beaches were closed as a precaution because of the algae blooms that can be harmful to people, pets and other animals.
The Geneva Lake Environmental Authority, the intermunicipal body that manages the lake, has issued several health warnings.

People who come into contact with blue-green algae may experience symptoms such as stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, fever, weakness and difficulty breathing. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact their doctor or the Wisconsin Poison Center immediately. If pets are showing symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services accepts reports of algae-related illnesses online and over the phone, and also provides resources for frequently asked questions, such as what an algae bloom is and what to do if you notice an algae bloom.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is also assessing the algae bloom.
