16-year-old Yekai Yekai (Yekai0904) faced off against Martijn Versteeg (Inadequance) of the Netherlands in the Pokémon World Championship Finals in Honolulu, Hawaii. Inadequance's team consisted of Giratina, Lanturn, Sableye, Skulking, Mimikyu and Pidgey, while Yekai0904's six-person team consisted of Altaria, Skulking, Grimmsnarl, Chachacha, Shadow Stag and Anihiape.

Both players had similar team compositions, both with overlapping Skarmory, but Yekai0904 had an early advantage by shielding Aqua Tail before landing Stone Edge. Yekai0904 seemed to have the more favorable matchup, as he relied heavily on Poliwrath against Inadequate, who took a risk with Charjabug.
In a fierce third round, Inadequance was down 0-2 and looked to turn the tide of the match by catching up to 1-2, but was ultimately defeated 1-3 by Yekai0904. With this win, Yekai0904 went from relative unknown to defeating one of the best players in the game, taking home HK$156,000 (US$20,000) in prize money, and becoming one of the most talked-about Pokémon GO players of all time.
