Google is rolling out the ability to build custom versions of its Gemini AI chatbots, tailored to specific tasks and preferences, which were first unveiled at this year's Google I/O event. These “Gems” are essentially Google's version of the custom GPTs found in the GPT store run by OpenAI on ChatGPT.
Gems is pitched as a personalized AI expert that can be used immediately after building it, without the need to go through multiple prompts to tailor common Gemini models to suit your purposes. Instead, Gemini Advanced subscribers, or those using the business or enterprise versions of Gemini, can jump right in and let Gemini do the work they want it to do. Gems is available on both desktop and mobile devices, in over 150 countries, and in many languages.
You can create a Gem in much the same way you create a CustomGPT. Just describe the type of expertise you need and the task you have in mind, and Gemini will translate that into instructions for Gemini. Just give it a name and you're ready to go. Check out the video below to see it in action:
Sophisticated AI Assistance
As a demonstration and to prepare for the introduction of new Gems, Google already has some pre-made Gems available for users. These are somewhat broad, but address common requests for Gemini. The pre-made Gems include Learning Coach, a tutor that simplifies complex ideas, Brainstormer, an idea generator, Career Guide, a tool to help you find and get a job, Coding Partner, a software programming assistant, and the aptly named Writing Editor.
Like the newly upgraded Imagen 3 AI image maker, Google clearly sees Gems as a great way to attract and keep users on Gemini. By incorporating it into the platform, Google may have an edge in attracting users looking for advanced, yet easy-to-use AI tools. It's all part of a larger plan to make Gemini as central to your life as possible. And if you don't like the way Gemini works out of the box, you can make it look and perform just the way you want it to.
