SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) — Children have more access to the internet than ever before, so it's important to keep them safe while using the web.
Dr. Nicole Lemon with Springfield Public Schools says it's important to monitor what kids are doing online.
“The No. 1 thing we want to remember is that children need to be under parental supervision and that the devices they're using actually belong to you as a parent. So remembering that and being mindful of that should be the number one thing when talking to parents about keeping their kids safe online, remember that you are in control of that device,” Dr. Lemon said.
Restricting devices to public spaces is a good first step, and you should also consider using parental controls.
“My favorites are limiting the amount of time you use the device so it shuts down at certain times of the day or if you spend too much time on it, limiting app downloads so you have to enter a code to download them onto your device, and limiting contacts so you have to approve anyone who is added to your device. All of this is built in and there are no additional subscription fees,” said Dr. Lemon.
Having your kids online has its pros and cons, and you should always remember that you never know who is on the other side of their device.
“The downside is, you're essentially inviting the world into your home and into your child's life, so if we can just limit that a little bit and slow it down a little bit, we're going to keep our kids a lot safer. We don't know who's on the other side of that device,” Dr. Lemon said.
And remember, it's okay to be a parent and not a friend.
“What I really want to say to parents is it's okay to put limits on your kids. It's okay to say, 'I don't want them to use this app,' and if that makes you a bad parent, then you're probably doing your job today,” Dr. Lemon said.
Remember, it's okay to use the controls to maintain a balance – kids can use the internet, but it's important that they are safe.
