Hungary and Republika Srpska. “Viktor Orbán will act as our Trojan horse”
Milorad Dodik, quoted by Clicks, praised the Orban government's “resistance to all external pressures” and announced the development of relations between Republika Srpska and Hungary. He added that after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, international relations will enter a “new era”.
He emphasized that among the European Union countries, Hungary has the best understanding of the situation in the Western Balkans, which allows Budapest to pursue effective policies towards the region. As president of the RS, he also pledged to maintain close ties with Russia and oppose Brussels' demands for Bosnia and Herzegovina to introduce visas for Russian and Turkish nationals.
Dodik has been on the U.S. sanctions list since 2022 for “violating or participating in acts that obstruct or threaten the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement (ending the war in BiH), and for corrupt activities.” ” In an interview with Russian TV RT in early February 2023, he admitted that “I want Republika Srpska to become independent.''
Hungary and pro-Russian leaders. Peter Szijjarto defends Milorad Dodik
Minister Peter Szijjarto stressed that Hungary's membership in the European Union would not be an obstacle to developing relations with the East and encouraged Bosnian Serbs to do the same. “Hungary has shown that it can effectively pursue its own interests while being a loyal member of the EU and NATO,” Szijjarto said, as quoted by RTRS television.
The Hungarians also mentioned the possibility of the EU imposing sanctions on Milorad Dodik. – By doing this, Szijjarto said, European politicians would be ignoring the will of Republika Srpska's voters and people.
– Brussels MPs who always demand respect for democracy are actually the biggest anti-democrats. When a conservative, patriotic politician wins an election in a country or organization, we immediately start talking about the end of democracy. But if liberals win, they will say democracy is stronger than ever, said Hungary's foreign affairs chief.
