Berkeley Public Health welcomes Dr. Shelley Facente, PhD, MPH, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Community Health Sciences, in July 2024. Dr. Facente earned her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health in 2020 and her MPH in 2004. She also earned her BA in Health Sociology from Ithaca College in 2002. We asked her about her work and her expectations for the coming year.
Where did you live and work before coming to UC Berkeley School of Public Health?
I have lived in the Bay Area since coming to Berkeley for my MPH in 2002. I have worked as a public health consultant since 2009 and currently run my own company, Facente Consulting, which has 10 employees, in addition to my position as an adjunct professor at UC Berkeley.
What are you currently working on?
I am a co-investigator on an NIH study looking at how to optimize continuity of care for HIV-infected individuals after release from prison, I am leading an evaluation of the Hellman Foundation's $21 million investment in a clinic-based food security intervention in San Francisco, and I am working on a feasibility assessment to open an overdose prevention center in New Haven, Connecticut.
What are your hopes for starting your new role at Berkeley Public Health?
Although my adjunct instructor position is new, I will be teaching CHS’s Program Planning course (PH 205) starting in 2022 and look forward to continuing to get to know new students each year through this interactive course.
