Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected for a second term as European Commission President, but what do we know about the 26 deputies who will serve under her?
EU member states have until August 30 to indicate whom they would like to nominate for commissioner positions.
Not everyone has done so yet — political turmoil in Belgium and Bulgaria is likely to delay it — and von der Leyen may oppose choosing a man because she wants to keep the gender ratio balanced.
Once the final list is known in mid-September, each commissioner will be assigned a field of responsibility and will then apply for confirmation from the European Parliament.
That may be difficult, especially for those who appear to have less experience (waves to 35-year-old Glenn Micallef from Malta) and even harder for those who have previously called MEPs “idiots” (heads down, Oliver Várhelyi from Hungary).
But whoever wins this election will be in charge of several key issues, from protecting the environment to aiding Ukraine.
From lawyers to linguists, reality TV stars to volleyball champions, take a look at the biographies of the people who could shape EU politics over the next five years. Click on a candidate to find out more.
