Over the past few months, the PAHO delegation has been following the discussions of the G20 Health Working Group, whose edition in 2024 will be chaired by Brazil. In September, the Working Group's final meeting before the Ministerial Meeting will take place, and PAHO will host, together with the WHO and the Brazilian government, an event entitled “Eliminating TB in a climate change context: building evidence to drive action”.
Recent emergencies have made health and climate change important topics, but their impact on tuberculosis control and treatment has yet to be fully explored in the global discussion.
Social, economic and environmental determinants of TB (such as inequality, poverty, food insecurity, mass displacement, disruptions to health systems, inadequate ventilation and air pollution) increase susceptibility to TB and increase people's vulnerability to the clinical and economic consequences of TB, contributing to its spread.
Furthermore, the researchers predict that climate-related risks (such as extreme heat, floods, storms and droughts) will continue to fuel endemic TB in the most affected countries, primarily through disruptions to health services and food insecurity, impeding progress towards eliminating the disease.
Building better, more resilient and environmentally sustainable health systems is therefore considered one of three key strategies to address the detrimental health effects of climate change.
Recognizing this situation, WHO, PAHO and the Brazilian Government will present the findings at the G20 on September 2nd from 8:00 am to 9:30 am (Brasilia time). The event will be streamed online via Zoom.
