An unusual search was carried out on Saturday as caregivers of an elderly woman began cleaning out her apartment in the northeastern Italian town of Montebelluna. The senior woman did not leave her room for health reasons, so she could not see exactly what her hired employees were doing.
Suddenly the maid noticed an old mattress, faded and dusty. In good faith, she decided it was time to get rid of him. But inside, the woman discovered – as Il Messaggero describes it – hidden “little treasures” worth about 50,000 euros, including life savings, credit cards and family jewellery. I didn't know there was one.
Italy. She threw the mattress in the trash. There was a housing complex inside
As a result, the mattresses ended up in the garbage, from where they were sent to landfills. The owners soon realized that there were no unusual hiding places in the house. She alerted her daughter and called for help from the Carabinieri and Civil Defense.
It was unclear whether the mattress had been damaged along the way or at the landfill, so a race against time began. Luckily we found the mattress quickly. The contents were returned intact to the senior, who “breathed a sigh of relief.''
Il Messaggero points out that this dangerous habit of hiding valuables in mattresses is still common among older Italians, but is disappearing every year.
