“This accreditation recognizes the groundbreaking research of IU Bloomington faculty, who are frequently cited by experts around the world,” IU President Pamela Whitten said. “Our rankings are also a testament to our strong international partnerships with communities and institutions on every major continent.”
The Best Global Universities ranking is based primarily on measures of a university's academic research and scholarship performance. This year, Indiana University Bloomington saw the largest increase in its citation impact score, moving up 168 places from 2023.
“The research of the School of Education faculty is clearly respected around the world, and our global reputation has grown through a strong history of international collaboration,” said Anastasia Morrone, dean of the School of Education at Indiana University in Bloomington. “In addition to this ranking, the 2023 Global Career Impact List, which ranks the world's most influential scientists based on citations, recently named more than 10 percent of our faculty members to the top 2 percent of scholars worldwide.”
Among the notable studies in the area of global research activities at the Indiana University School of Education in Bloomington is a project by Carmen Medina, professor of literacy, culture and language education, who is working with colleagues in Puerto Rico to develop culturally appropriate curricula and foster critical literacy in the country.
The school’s Global and International Engagement Office promotes global research engagement, provides faculty and students with opportunities to connect with researchers across borders, and manages several active international academic partnerships. These partner institutions include the University of Hamburg in Germany, which the school hosted its leaders during a visit to the IU Bloomington campus last year.
Recently, faculty from the IU School of Education in Bloomington and the University of Hamburg jointly led the organization of an international forum on innovations in educational research, technology and e-learning at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan.
The School of Education is also known for its Global Gateways for Teachers, an internationally recognized, award-winning program that allows teacher preparation students to fulfill their teaching practicum requirements while gaining international experience.
The overall ranking of Best Global Universities is based on a methodology developed by U.S. News, using 13 ranking factors calculated using “global and regional reputation indicators” in addition to academic research performance indicators such as citations and publications.
Subject-specific rankings are based on a different methodology using 11 factors based on academic research output in a field, including research publications and citation impact, as well as indicators of global and regional reputation in a particular field.
In addition to the School of Education's ranking of 38th, other academic disciplines at Indiana University Bloomington that ranked in the top 100 in the world include Economics and Business at 43rd (tie), Arts and Humanities at 62nd, Psychiatry/Psychology at 66th, Social Sciences and Public Health at 71st (tie), Gastroenterology and Hepatology at 75th (tie), Neuroscience and Behavioral Sciences at 78th, Clinical Medicine at 83rd (tie), and Surgery at 98th.
