Norway's Jacob Ingebrigtsen broke the 28-year-old world record in the 3,000 meters on Sunday at the Diamond League meet in Poland.
Ingebrigtsen, the Olympic champion in the 1,500m and 5,000m, clocked 7 minutes 17.55 seconds in the Silesian Diamond League.
This broke the previous world record of 7 minutes 20.67 seconds set by Kenya's Daniel Komen in 1996.
Although the 3,000 meters is not an Olympic event or an event at the biennial World Outdoor Championships, Komen's record was the oldest world record in any men's individual track event that is an Olympic event.

Ingebrigtsen also holds the world records in the 2000 metres and two miles, both of which he has set to be broken in 2023. These distances are also not on the Olympic or World Championship programmes.
Ingebrigtsen is the fourth fastest 1500m runner of all time and the third fastest mile runner of all time.
He ran a personal best of 7 minutes 23.63 seconds in the 3,000 meters on Sunday, entering the race as the third-fastest athlete of all time.
“Now I want to try for world records at all distances, but one step at a time,” he said after Sunday's race, according to the Diamond League.
Also on Sunday, Joe Kovacs beat Ryan Crowther in the shot put by 22.14 seconds to win his third consecutive Olympic silver medal at Paris.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Olympic gold medalist Grant Holloway avenged his only loss of 2024 with a narrow victory over Olympic bronze medalist Rasheed Broadbell of Jamaica. Holloway, who was edged out by Broadbell in Lausanne last Thursday, won by one-hundredth of a second on Sunday.
Holloway finished in 13.04 seconds, just shy of his 12th sub-13-second time, tying him with 1996 Olympic gold medalist Allen Johnson for the most sub-13-second races of all time.
The Diamond League next moves to Rome on Friday and will be broadcast live on Peacock from 3-5 pm ET.
