The earthquake occurred in southwestern Japan just after 9pm on Monday. The shaking was felt about 18 kilometers off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region and 36 kilometers inland.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of a tsunami that could exceed 1 meter in height. So far, several small tsunamis of up to several tens of centimeters have been recorded. Although the wave height is not very high, it is still very strong. Residents and tourists were advised to avoid staying on the coast.

“Tsunami waves may strike multiple times. Please do not go into the sea or near coastal areas,” the agency said on social media.
Local media reported no injuries. There was minor damage to buildings in several locations. Footage posted on social media showed objects falling from shelves and small pieces of furniture being toppled over.
