On Monday, August 12, the U.S. stock market closed mixed as investors awaited key U.S. economic data, especially on consumer prices, to gauge Fed policy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose.
Economic data showed the U.S. government's budget deficit rose to $244 billion in July, up from $220.7 billion in the same month last year.
Most sectors of the S&P 500 ended lower, led by declines in communication services, real estate and industrials, while energy and utility stocks rose.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.36% to close at 39,357.01, the S&P 500 finished flat at 5,344.39, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.21% to close at 16,780.61.

Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed 3.37% higher at 36,205.00 on Tuesday, driven by gains in the banking, chemical, petroleum & plastics and financial services sectors. The Japanese market gained significantly as it rebounded from last week's volatility caused by concerns over the strength of the yen and a possible US recession. The positive momentum was fuelled by investor optimism ahead of the release of US inflation data that is expected to shed light on the direction of Federal Reserve policy. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 closed 0.17% higher at 7,826.80, driven by gains in the gold, financial and consumer discretionary sectors. India's Nifty 50 was down 0.81% to 24,149.10 and the Nifty 500 was down 0.85% to 22,721.90. China's Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.34% to close at 2,867.95, while the Shenzhen Composite Index rose 0.26% to close at 3,334.39. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.36% to close at 17,174.06.

The European STOXX 50 index rose 0.27%, Germany's DAX rose 0.33%, France's CAC fell 0.04%, and the UK's FTSE 100 fell 0.01%.
