Joe Biden and Pope Francis are scheduled to meet at the Vatican just before the US president leaves office. They want to talk about “world peace” and the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Mr. Biden will also travel to Italy, where he will be welcomed by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.
The White House announced Thursday that Joe Biden has accepted Pope Francis' invitation to visit the Vatican on January 10. According to Vatican News and other world media, the outgoing US president and the head of the church will speak about “world peace.”

Earlier, Mr. Biden and Mr. Francisco spoke by phone. “The President thanked the Pope for his continued advocacy to alleviate suffering in the world and for his commitment to protecting human rights and religious freedom,” the statement read.

American leaders are not going to fly to the Italian peninsula just for an audience. During his three-day visit, he will also meet with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni and thank her for her leadership in the G7, a group of the world's largest economies.
Biden met with Francisco in June. They then discussed issues related to events in Israel, the Gaza Strip, and Ukraine, and also discussed climate change. They then emphasized, among other things: There is an “urgent need for an immediate cease-fire and hostage agreement” in the Gaza Strip, and the need to address the “grave humanitarian crisis” there.

Pope Francis has previously criticized Biden, a Catholic, for being sympathetic to abortion, calling it a “contradiction.” He also called for an end to the production and use of anti-personnel explosives, just a week after Biden authorized Ukraine's use of U.S. landmines in the Russia-Ukraine war.
