Lancaster General Health is offering free “Mental Health First Aid” training this month for anyone who wants to learn more about helping individuals in crisis.
There are two sessions scheduled:
Youth Mental Health First Aid When: Monday, Aug. 12, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Where: Parish Resource Center, Suite 18, 2160 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Adult Mental Health First Aid When: Tuesday, Aug. 27, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Where: Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, East Conference Room, 2102 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster.
The training is aimed at general adult community members, whether they work in the health or social care sector. The first training is aimed at people who work regularly with young people aged 12 to 18.
Both provide strategies for identifying and supporting individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues, as well as information on trauma, substance use and self-care.
Pre-registration is required. To register, click here or email Brook Hummel at [email protected]. Participants must complete the online course at least 48 hours prior to class. Courses range from 90 minutes to 2 hours in length.
The training will be held again in September at Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East in Paradise. The youth session will be held on Monday, September 9th from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and the adult session will be held on Thursday, September 26th from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The Mental Health First Aid training was developed by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. LGH partners with community service groups to deliver the sessions, using a grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
