Two Just Stop Ora women have been arrested for spray painting Charles Darwin’s grave. Activists said they wanted to do this to draw attention to the fact that 2024 was the hottest year on record.
Police were called to Westminster Abbey in London on Monday. The intervention took place in connection with the incident in which Just Stop Oil activists destroyed the grave of Charles Darwin, the eminent biologist and founder of the theory of evolution, with spray paint.

Two activists wrote in orange paint the words “1.5 is dead,” meaning the average global temperature has increased by 1.5 degrees Celsius.

– 2024 was the hottest year on record. We have exceeded the 1.5 degrees Celsius standard that is supposed to protect us. Activists say millions of people have been forced to evacuate, California has been devastated by fires and three-quarters of all wildlife has been lost since the 1970s.
During the action, both women explained that they chose Charles Darwin’s grave because “he was an outstanding scientist” and that they would understand what was going on.

The second woman added that she did it because “there is no hope in the world anymore.” “We did this specifically in Darwin’s grave because he’s going to be turning over in his grave because of the sixth mass extinction that’s happening right now,” she said.

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that two women have been arrested on suspicion of damaging Westminster Abbey.
Those detained were Alison Lee, 66, a former teacher, and Dee Bry, 77, a former local government employee from Somerset.

A spokesperson for Westminster Abbey said the abbey’s conservators had “taken immediate action to clean the monument”. The slab has not suffered any permanent damage and will soon regain its former appearance.
The European climate change monitoring service Copernicus reported that 2024 was the warmest year on record. The average temperature rose by 1.5 degrees Celsius.
