Massey was the daughter of Betty Sue Lynn, the eldest of six children born to her husband Oliver “Doolittle” Lynn, whom she married when she was 15.
Lynn and Oliver's other children include Clara Marie, Ernest Ray, twins Peggy Jean and Patsy Irene, and a son, Jack Benny, who went missing while horseback riding at her Hurricane Mills ranch and drowned in 1984.
Betty Sue died in 2013 at age 64 from complications from emphysema near her mother's ranch, according to the Associated Press.
“Our family is so grateful for all the prayers and love that has been extended to us.”

During an appearance on Southern Living's Biscuits & Jam podcast, Russell said, “Memo (as Lynn is known) gave me her guitar when I was 15 at the Ryman Auditorium. She said, 'You can do this.' She always saw this talent in me, even when I was really little, and she felt like she needed to pass the guitar to me as a torch in a way.”
