A Polish couple hanged from a cliff in Madeira, Portugal. They were separated by the flood. The rescue operation took several hours, so the couple had to spend the night in the cave. Eventually the Poles were rescued and taken to hospital. “The health condition of the rescued people is stable,” said the Portuguese National Maritime Administration (AMN).
According to the management of the National Maritime Administration of Portugal (AMN), local services received an alarm signal on Friday evening. Due to the high tide, the Polish couple got separated on one of the mountains near the point of Ponta do Pargo, which is located in the west of the island.
They spent the night in a cave
A rescue boat was immediately dispatched, but high waves made it difficult to reach the Polish tourists. According to the statement of the Ministry of Defense, it became impossible to provide aid to the Poles “both by sea and by air”. Finally, they had to spend the night in one of the caves near the mountain.
The rescue operation led by four Portuguese security services was completed on Saturday morning. The Poles were rescued from the mountain by a rescue team that arrived by helicopter from the nearby island of Porto Santo.
“The health condition of the rescued people is stable,” the AMN management said, specifying that before noon they were transferred to one of the hospitals in Funchal, the main city of Madeira.
