New York City will become the epicenter of the chess world when the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships returns to North America for the first time from December 26-31, 2024. With the iconic Wall Street as its backdrop, the world's best chess players will convene in the global financial capital for thrilling competition.
High-speed chess formats such as Rapid and Blitz are some of the most exciting forms of the sport, requiring quick decisions, sharp instincts and strong nerves. These fast-paced games are popular among players and spectators as they test not only skill but also mental endurance.
Another element that will add to the excitement of this year's event is the inclusion of a free day between the Rapid and Blitz Championships dedicated to Chess Davos, a special conference exploring the intersection of chess and finance.
“This will be a unique event in many ways, bringing together the top chess grandmasters in the economic capital of the world. What excites me is the synergies that can emerge from bringing together the brightest minds,” said FIDE CEO Emil Stovsky. “I am excited about this groundbreaking, 'there you were there' event.”
A monumental debut in America's heartland
Synonymous with power and intensity, Wall Street provides the perfect backdrop for this high-stakes event. The 2024 FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championship promises to be the most spectacular yet, as chess merges with the beating heart of global finance. This historic occasion marks the first time the event will be held in North America, raising the excitement and prestige of chess in the United States to new heights. The championship will be a widely broadcast and viewed event, and all eyes will surely be on Wall Street this December.
“This year's FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championship marks a historic milestone for chess, as it will be held in North America for the first time and will return to New York, a city with a rich chess tradition,” said FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich. “As we celebrate FIDE's 100th anniversary this year, it is a fitting year to look back on the legendary New York International Chess Tournament, which took place exactly 100 years ago and symbolized a glorious era for chess in the United States. As chess now enters a new golden age in the United States, we are pleased to be able to connect this glorious past with our thriving present.”
New Schedule
This year, FIDE has introduced a new schedule designed to enhance the experience for players and spectators: events will begin with the Rapid Championship from December 26-28, with a one-day break on December 29. Competition will resume with the Blitz Championship on December 30 and 31.
