The information provided by Marcin Romanowski's representative triggered an avalanche of comments. “Romanovsky was hidden by Orbán. Kaczynski's people are in hiding with Putin's friends. Shame and disgrace!” – wrote Tomasz Trela (left) on website X.
– These are Mr. Romanovsky's actions and he is responsible for them. There is a political undertone to this whole issue, with Donald Tusk looking for scandals everywhere and covering up government incompetence, said a presidential adviser asked about the issue on Radio Z. Alvin Gajadur commented:
“Orbán has declared that Hungary will grant asylum to Romanovski. This is a very serious legal wrong in the EU. Orbán and Romanovski cannot get away with this wrong. The remaining PiS politicians should seriously think about whether they want to live in Poland or in a satellite state of Moscow,” commented Zbigniew Konwiński (KO).
Krzysztof Simiszek also commented on the situation on website X. “Romanowski's exile in Hungary is an act of hostility against the Polish state. It also makes a mockery of the asylum system, which is given to the persecuted, and not to those accused of crimes!” – he wrote.
Comments about Martin Romanowski flooded in. “Tusk will be furious.”
“Russia, Belarus, Poland. On the international stage, Donald Tusk's Poland is an utter disgrace. Today, Poland is the only country whose citizens receive asylum in another country on exactly the same principles as nationals of Belarus and Russia. It is a member state of the EU.” Janusz Kowalski.
“Mr. Marcin Romanowski received political asylum in Hungary. This is the first time such a situation has occurred in Poland since 1989. Mr. Tusk will be furious. He will forcefully take over the prosecutor's office and carry out his political orders. The question of using it for this purpose will be the subject of international debate,'' commented Sebastian Caleta.
“Certainly, many of our foreign partners, when they read all the public statements about revenge and accountability from Tusk, Bodnar, and Bodner supporters in the prosecutor's office and the courts, think this 'restoration of the rule of law' and ' “You'll be shocked at what 'fighting' meant. 'It was all about democracy,'” he added.
“Former Deputy Minister of Justice Marcin Romanovsky has been granted political asylum in Hungary,” wrote PiS activist Oskar Šafarovic.
“Marzena Pacuska, a member of the National Broadcasting Council, also commented on the case. “This is the first case since 1989 to grant international protection to Poles in another country,'' she wrote.
Marcin Romanowski on guard in Hungary
On Thursday night, Romanowski's lawyer Bartosz Lewandowski announced that his client had received protection from the Hungarian government.
He said: “The Hungarian government has received the application of Member of Parliament Marcin Romanovski to obtain international protection under the Asylum Act 2007 in connection with acts committed by the Polish government and its National Prosecution Service against his rights and freedoms. “I recognized that,'' he said. It's on the X website.
“Member Marcin Romanowski has decided to file an application for international protection in order to draw the attention of the international community to the situation in Poland and to the political repression affecting the opposition parties in our country,” he explained.
As he pointed out, Mr. Romanowski “could face allegations from law enforcement authorities at any time if standards of the rule of law are restored in Poland.”
The National Prosecutor's Office accused PiS members of committing 11 crimes, including participation in an organized crime group and unfair competition to obtain funds from the Justice Fund. The incidents allegedly occurred when Mr. Romanowski was deputy secretary of the Department of Justice, overseeing the Justice Fund, from 2019 to 2023.
The charges also relate to “the embezzlement of property entrusted to the suspect in the form of money, amounting to more than 107 million zlotys, and the attempted embezzlement of money, amounting to more than 58 million zlotys.” On Thursday, the Warsaw District Court announced the issuance of a European arrest warrant for Romanowski.
