It's Monday, October 7th 9. National Prosecuting Authority. This is where Marcin Romanowski, whom PK wants to prosecute again, will be interrogated. Again, the prosecutor's office said that these measures, which were first taken on July 15 after Seim's immunity had been revoked on July 12, were due to the immunity of the Council of Europe Association, which was protecting him at the time. This is because they are emphasizing that it had no effect.
The so-called “double immunity'' issue was resolved in early October when the Parliament of the Council of Europe voted to abolish immunity for politicians. That's why PK wanted to take the next step. However, Romanowski did not take part in the penalty shootout.
– Romanovsky did not respond to the summons, but his lawyer sent a letter justifying his absence, indicating that it was due to a long-planned trip abroad – Prosecutors at the time Official Przemysław Nowak explained.
Hungarian Romanovsky. What was he doing there in October?
“Traveling abroad” means nothing more than a visit to Hungary. What was Romanovsky doing on the Danube at that time? What were the pressing circumstances that prevented him from visiting the Polish National Prosecutor's Office? We do not yet know this, but it is clear that politicians were already preparing for various possible scenarios in the future. A new situation has come to light that may indicate.
Did he already foresee that he would need asylum or international protection? To receive international protection, an application must be submitted in advance. Each country has different customs, so the steps will vary slightly from country to country.
Lawyers and international law experts stressed on Thursday and Friday news programs that such a process usually takes at least two to three months. Meanwhile, Romanovsky was in Hungary two and a half months ago.
– Almost no time has passed. Dr. Katarzyna Gajovicek Prusinska told TVN24 that around the world this type of procedure lasts from several months to several dozen months. “In the case of Hungary, the process is faster, but we are still discussing the 60-day deadline,” the lawyer added.
In Poland, the filing of an application for international protection requires presence on the territory of our country, which entails a number of additional features. When submitting your application, you will also be required to have a photo taken, fingerprints taken, and a personal interview. Applications will be accepted and registered immediately within 3 business days. A decision will be issued within six months of filing your application, but in some cases your application may be considered expedited and a decision issued within 30 days.
Hungarian Romanovsky. When did he submit his application?
A lawyer for the former justice minister was contacted for comment. Zbigniew Żywienkarski.
– Martin Romanovsky submitted such an application when he arrived in Hungary. Professor Intalia said he could have submitted the application on October 7, but he could have submitted it later, after arriving in Hungary, on December 6. Ziwienkarski. He points out that each country has its own procedures in this regard.
– If there is an urgent case, it will certainly be faster – the professor emphasizes. Ziwienkarski.
A prominent lawyer said the application for international protection could have been filed two and a half months in advance, but could have been filed in early December. If the latter option, what was Romanovsky doing in Hungary in October? As another interlocutor familiar with the case suggests, he may simply be “testing Hungarian ground.”
– Perhaps he was looking into what would happen with the possibility of prosecution. If something were to happen, Hungary would look upon him in a friendly manner or protect him. He probably also had political conversations. He had time to prepare, the interlocutor said.
The fact today is that Hungary granted Romanovsky international protection. At the same time, politicians accused of several crimes are being indicted on European arrest warrants. A Hungarian court will now decide whether to detain Romanovsky in custody.
Meanwhile, Hungary is becoming a safe haven for politicians from other countries. Let us recall that Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro and North Macedonia's former prime minister Nikola Gruevski were also welcomed with open arms in this country. The first took refuge in the Hungarian embassy in the Brazilian capital in mid-February after police confiscated his passport. Meanwhile, Gruewski received asylum from Hungary's Orbán in 2018 and was indicted on corruption charges in Hungary.
