Mauritius is preparing for the arrival of the Garance Cyclone. The island’s only airport was closed until appeal, with authorities appealing residents and tourists to stay in their homes and hotels.
Already on Wednesday, Mauritius weather services issued a warning against the Garance Cyclone. The Garance Cyclone was approximately 270 km northwest of the island.
On Thursday, wind speeds with heavy rain exceeded 70km/h.

“The cyclone is dangerously close to Mauritius and is a direct threat” – warnings in latest communications.
In addition to strong winds, floods, rough seas and heavy rain should also be expected. These phenomena are intensifying in the evening and at night.

In connection with the danger, the island’s only airport has been closed.
“We encourage anyone planning a trip to contact the airline to obtain more information about the airport that did not fail until they received a confirmation of the flight status and departure time,” the Mauritius Airport said in a statement.

The service also appealed to tourists, keeping them away from the coast.
The decision to close the airport was also made by a nearby reunion island that belongs to France. There are also schools starting on Wednesday afternoons.
Authorities on both islands ordered residents to stay home and use phones only when electricity and water supply intervals and if it was “absolutely necessary.”
