SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 21, 2024 (BUSINESS WIRE) — McAfee, a global leader in online protection, today announced the release of McAfee® Deepfake Detector, the latest addition to its AI-powered product portfolio. With AI-created videos, or deepfakes, flooding the internet and circulating on social media, we live in a world where we don't believe what we see or hear. To combat the rise of AI scams and misinformation, McAfee has teamed up with Lenovo to offer powerful AI-based deepfake detection capabilities to customers who purchase select Lenovo AI PCs, starting today. To help educate consumers, McAfee is also releasing a Smart AI Hub with resources and interactive elements to raise awareness of deepfakes and AI-powered scams.
The advent of AI has changed the game for cybercriminals, who are creating more convincing, personalized AI-generated scams at scale. The impact of deepfake scams is life-changing, with victims reporting losses ranging from $250 to over $500,000.1 While not all AI content is created with malicious intent, being able to know if a video is real or fake empowers consumers to make smarter, more informed decisions.
“Knowledge is power, and this is more true than ever in today's AI-driven world,” said Roma Majumdar, senior vice president of products at McAfee. “You no longer have to wonder if Warren Buffett's investment plans are legitimate, if Taylor Swift really wants to give away cookware to her fans, or if a politician really said those words. With McAfee Deepfake Detector, we'll automatically provide you with answers within seconds.”
“McAfee is inspired by the transformative potential of AI and is committed to shaping a future where AI is used for good. Partnering with Lenovo enhances our ability to deliver the most effective, automated, AI-powered deepfake detection, providing users with a powerful digital guardian on their PC. Together, our companies will leverage AI in new and innovative ways to empower individuals with cutting-edge deepfake detection capabilities so they can safely and confidently navigate the evolving online world.”
“The Lenovo and McAfee collaboration combines the unique expertise of two global leaders to deliver innovative solutions that give consumers greater trust in the content they view online,” said Igor Bergman, vice president, Lenovo Cloud and Software, Intelligent Devices Group. “Data shows that nearly two-thirds (64%) of people are more concerned about deepfakes than they were a year ago.2 Lenovo's expertise as an end-to-end technology solutions leader and McAfee's experience in AI-powered online protection are perfectly complementary, optimizing hardware and software capabilities for the benefit of consumers.”
Enhanced performance with privacy features
McAfee® Deepfake Detector is now available exclusively on select Lenovo AI PCs. Consumers who opt in will receive alerts within seconds when AI-altered voice is detected in their videos, without having to resort to tedious manual video uploads. Trained on nearly 200,000 samples and counting, McAfee's AI detection model, which leverages the power of select Lenovo AI PCs with NPUs, performs the entire identification process, called inference, directly on the PC, maximizing on-device processing and keeping users' personal data out of the cloud. McAfee never collects or records users' voice, and users are always in control, able to turn voice detection on or off as needed.
By leveraging the NPU and performing analysis on-device, McAfee delivers comprehensive privacy, accelerates processing speeds, and improves battery life compared to cloud-based usage. These advancements significantly improve consumers' experience, empowering them to make informed decisions about the content they watch and protecting them from cybercriminals who manipulate video audio, all without slowing down their PC. This allows consumers to use their PC as they normally would, including gaming, browsing, and watching videos. Meanwhile, McAfee Deepfake Detector works quietly in the background, protecting people from deception and alerting them to potential scams, without slowing down performance.
Availability and Pricing
McAfee® Deepfake Detector is available for English detection on select new Lenovo AI PC3s available to order in the US, UK, and Australia starting August 21, 2024 on Lenovo.com and at select local retailers.
Lenovo AI PC customers can get a free 30-day trial of McAfee Deepfake Detector, with US pricing starting at $9.99 for the first year.
