HARRISON COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) – Students from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College put their live entertainment skills to the test by showcasing their talents and performing live music.
Don't be fooled by this rock and roll style performance.
This showcase at iMPAC showcased the lighting and sound design that MGCCC students learned in the Live Entertainment and Technology program.
This is all to spread the word that MGCCC Harrison County Campus is offering this special program to current and future students.
“In this program, we'll be teaching you all about back lines, audio, lighting and the studio, but you'll also have the opportunity to learn about what's going on today. One of my students happens to be in a band, so they'll also be introduced to that band,” said MGCCC Live Entertainment Technology instructor Bailey Ortman.
The program has been running on the MGCCC campus for several years, but this will be the first time the live entertainment program has been showcased.
Graduates of this program feel prepared for careers in the live entertainment industry thanks to the knowledge they gained through the program.
“Being able to demonstrate that you already have knowledge of audio and lighting is very helpful because employers will trust you more because they'll know you're knowledgeable about your job,” said Bear Joiner, a former MGCCC Live Entertainment program student.
The showcase also gave one of our former students the opportunity to perform in the band.
They work under the name Midnight Shadows and are currently having the opportunity to record their EP “Silver in the Ashes” in the recording booth at iMPAC as a school project.
“It's a project, so I thought, 'This could be my start, I could get my staff going with the band,'” said Dustin Ross, a former MGCCC student and Midnight Shadows band member.
Ortman says the next step is to reach out to nearby communities to offer internship opportunities for students and partner with local businesses.
Students interested in the program must register for the upcoming semester by the first day of classes on Aug. 21.
