Last year was one of the most turbulent years in the Middle East since the 1973 Yom Kippur War. It was undoubtedly the bloodiest – tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, were killed. What is in store for the region in the new year?
Donald Trump’s presidency next year will be a turning point in the Middle East (he will be sworn in on January 20). Also, due to the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, there will be a new distribution of influence. Israel can end the war in Gaza. But he does not want to do this. More precisely, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not do this.
We asked former ambassadors of Poland to Israel and Israel to Poland about the future of the Middle East and Israel.

Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, was killed in Tehran at the end of July. He was replaced by Yahya Sinvor – after three months in the Gaza strip. Despite the military goals achieved, the war in the Palestinian enclave is not over, as Israel’s national defense minister stated. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, quickly fired him.
For the first time in history, Iran attacked Israel directly from its territory. And twice. Israel invaded Lebanon. He eliminated Hassan Nasr Allah, the leader of Hezbollah. A revolution took place in Syria that overthrew the Assad regime. It goes unknown. New government, new order.

Marek Magierowski: Yes, but what happened this year actually started in 2023, on October 7 to be precise. Israel was attacked on the ground. Hamas was able to take control of its southern part within hours.
Israel’s political class has introduced the concept of a second holocaust into the debate, which, according to their logic, could happen again. It is used in the context of the arms race in the Middle East, Iran’s nuclear program, and recurring tensions between Israel and the Gaza Strip or Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
