MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 25th
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 2:10 PM EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, Minnesota
Broadcast – MLB TV
Zebe Matthews had only two starts before Sunday's game, but in those games he had faced two formidable offenses. Kansas City and San Diego are both top 10 in runs scored, but the young right-hander was limited to just two earned runs. St. Louis has fared much worse than those two teams so far, ranking 24th in offense and not allowing a run in the first inning in their past three games. Matthews should be poised to get off to a good start for the NRFI.
Most of the sweat in this NRFI should come in the bottom of the innings. The Twins are 6th in runs scored, but 12th if you look at just the first innings. Either way, they're tough to hold early. But I trust Erick Fedde. He's had his ups and downs since being traded to the Cardinals, but he had a promising start in our last matchup against a division rival. He pitched 5.2 innings against the Brewers, allowing only 2 runs. If he takes the mound on Sunday, he'll finish this NRFI for us.
NRFI/YRFI bets on August 25: No (-115)
Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 12:05 PM ET
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – Roku
I've been watching a lot of Braves games lately, and the reason is simple: they have the best starting pitching staff, but they just haven't been able to hit lately.
Sunday was no exception as Reyald Lopez made his second start since spending an extended period on the disabled list. Anyone looking for NRFI here would be concerned about his injury, but consider this his first start since returning. He pitched 5.0 innings and struck out 10 in a win against the Phillies. That brings his ERA down to 2.05 and would make him a Cy Young candidate if he pitches enough innings. The Nationals are 27th in first-inning runs scored, so I don't think there's much to worry about here.
In the bottom innings, we see the aforementioned Braves lineup. They have won five of their last six games, but have only allowed 18 runs in that time (3.0 per game). Other than a leadoff home run by Michael Harris in Game 1 of this series, they have posed little threat early in those games. Their opponent on Sunday afternoon is DJ Hurts, who has not allowed more than two runs in six straight games, so look for him to continue this lackluster run for the Braves.
NRFI/YRFI bets on August 25: No (-120)
