On Friday, rescuers from the Horska Zachranna Service (HZS) urged caution against “walruses” who want to take part in the world record attempt to climb Snežka in their underwear. According to Czech lifeguards, accidents are possible.
After two weeks, about a hundred people are planning to climb the highest mountain in the Czech Republic and break the so-called “dry winter swimming” record. They should only wear shorts and have warmer clothes in their backpacks. Therefore, the rescuers of the Horska Zachranna Service (HZS) asked the participants of the project whether they were ready for such an extreme risk.
According to rescuers, this effort should not be dangerous for people who are familiar with low temperatures, but since this information appeared on the Internet, they fear that unprepared people will also participate in it.
Swimming in difficult conditions
Marek Friesz, spokesman for Karkonoska Grupa HZS, said that if necessary, rescuers would intervene, but this could prolong the time needed to help other people. According to him, swimming in winter is safer even at low temperatures, but in dry weather than in rain, snow, wind and temperatures around zero. The road leading to winter is nine kilometers long, and its height is 800 meters. Organizers, record holder in dry winter swimming, coach Dominik Lux and cold therapy coach Libor Mattus believe that the help of lifeguards is not needed. They want to minimize the risk and only take people who can withstand extreme conditions to the mountains. In case of crisis, participants of the trial should have warm clothes and sleeping bags with them. The record holder's group is accompanied by guards. Everyone should take warming ginger tea with them.
