More than 1,500 people have escaped from Mozambican prisons. Revolts and protests have intensified in the country since the elections were officially announced. Some believe it's fake.
A prison revolt broke out in Mozambique's capital Maputo on Wednesday, with some 1,534 people fleeing. 33 people died. Police chief Bernardino Rafael said about 150 people had been arrested, according to France 24 news agency.
The rebellion came a day after Monday's riot. Mozambique's Supreme Court has certified the victory of Frelimo party presidential candidate Daniel Chapo in a disputed October election that left at least 21 people dead, Reuters reported.

The decision by Mozambique's Constitutional Council sparked new protests by rebel groups and their supporters across the country. They say the vote was rigged.

Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda told public broadcaster TVM on Tuesday that at least 78 people had been arrested and security measures were being stepped up across the country. – The minister said the military and defense forces would increase their presence in sensitive locations, the France 24 news agency reported.
Opposition parties and election observers accused Frelimo of voter fraud. However, authorities deny this.
– According to preliminary data, 236 acts of violence were reported across the country in the past 24 hours, resulting in the deaths of 21 people, including two police officers in the Republic of Mozambique, President Ronda announced on Tuesday. Thirteen civilians and 12 police officers were also injured.
