NASA has announced that it will use the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft to return two astronauts who have been trapped in space for months, dealing a new blow to aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
NASA said it no longer trusted Boeing's troubled Starliner spacecraft to return to Earth uncrewed, with the two astronauts, Sunita Williams and Barry “Batch” Wilmore, scheduled to return in February 2025.
Williams and Wilmore have been aboard the International Space Station since early June and plan to remain there until then.
The decision was the result of a “commitment to safety,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said. “Our core value is safety, it's our North Star,” he told reporters on Saturday.
