Friday night was a matchup we've seen before in conference play, but not this year. Neshannock and Mohawk met for the first time last night as non-section rivals. Neshannock was demoted to 1A in the WPIAL after the 2023 season, while Mohawk remained in 2A. The game started off very fast for Mohawk, with junior QB Bobby Faden carrying the ball on the first possession of the game and scoring a touchdown for Mohawk.
But Neshannock wasn't sitting back. The Lancers' next drive ended with a 71-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gino Mozzosio to Ethan Beaman. The game went back and forth, and the next Mohawk drive ended with a touchdown on a handoff to the Warriors' Jackson Chapman. Going into halftime, the Mohawks led 30-21. The Lancers were desperate for the ball in the second half, and Dom Cubellis intercepted Bobby Faden for a pick-six touchdown by Neshannock.
The Lancers made several mistakes in this game, but the big one was ball safety. Senior OL/DL Tony Perrotta had this to say about the Lancers fumble: “One of our weaknesses in this game was ball safety and turnovers.” In the second half, the Lancers kept up with Mohawk and held Faden at bay. In the fourth quarter, Neshankox's defense really gave Mohawk a hard time. They ended Mohawk's final drive, and even better, junior Ashton Allison intercepted Faden to end the game with a final score of 42-37.
Senior Tony Perrotta had this to say about his team's performance: “Once we did our homework and started reading the keys, I think we were able to keep the pressure on Faden and Mohawk.” Neshannock travels to Union Area next week to take on the Scotties. Mohawk will face the Laurel Spartans in their home opener.
