The Houston Texans, like the rest of the NFL, are set to trim their roster from 90 players down to the original 53 by Tuesday's deadline, effectively cutting their roster in half. As part of their efforts to reach that threshold, the team has waived cornerback CJ Henderson, according to KPRC 2 Houston.
This is the latest chapter in a tough journey for Henderson since entering the league in 2020. The Florida native was initially projected as a potential shutdown cornerback, especially after the Jacksonville Jaguars acquired him out of Duval County with the ninth overall pick. Injuries limited Henderson to just eight games as a rookie before he was traded to the Carolina Panthers midway through his sophomore season.
Henderson started 22 of 39 games in his three seasons with the Panthers. Last season he started 7 of 12 games and recorded 39 tackles, one sack and two pass breakups. In coverage, quarterbacks were only targeted 73% of the time against Henderson and had a passer rating of 106.8. Henderson has recorded 172 tackles, 16 pass breakups and three interceptions in 49 games.
Henderson signed with the Houston Texans in March and competed for a spot in the team's secondary all summer, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
