MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Northern Michigan University's Rural Health Center will again offer a virtual Community Healthcare Worker Certification Program this fall.
The program was revived thanks to a $1.4 million grant from the UP Workforce Innovation Network (UP WIN). The 12-day course includes training in mental health, first aid and adverse child events. The course would normally cost more than $1,600 but is now being offered for just $250.
“There is a critical need right now to continue our efforts to train, increase and expand our health care workforce, from dental hygienists to paramedics to emergency medical technicians. There is a great need right now and it's up to us to train our own workforce,” said Elise Barr, director of NMU's Center for Rural Health.
The virtual program will begin Oct. 1. The grant has enabled the center to revive its paramedic program and create a new community paramedic education program that can be used as a pilot for other schools.
