Foreign runners, including several poles, will take part in marathon races organized in the capital. This is the first event of this type since 2019, when the country was closed to tourists from overseas due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The first foreign athletes have already departed from Beijing to Pyongyang and are taking part in an event that is part of a celebration commemorating the birth of the first North Korean leader, Kim Il Sung. The race, named “Pyongyang Marathon,” takes place on Sundays, and runners in our country rarely know about this closed country either.
The extremes of North Korea. “There’s no contact with me.”
The issue of travel to North Korea was commented on by one of the event’s participants, Wojciech Kopeć, a popular blogger tanner.
“On Sunday, his next marathon will begin this year. This time it will be the capital of North Korea. I can’t wait. Let my fingers cross – I have not been contacted with me for six days.”
Kopecci is a multi-medal of national championships in the junior, youth and senior categories, with victory in the Bhutan Marathon, among other things.

This year’s event will attract around 200 participants – said a representative from the Koryo Tour Tourism Bureau, quoted by the Australian sender of SBS. According to Simon Cockerell, “North Korea is an attractive place that attracts people interested in the possibility of visiting this complex and complicated country.”
North Korea opened its border for foreign tourists for the first time in mid-February after the pandemic. They were able to visit the Layson area north of the country. But it’s not clear, as three weeks later, without giving a reason, all trips will be suspended and DPRK tourism will take care of the marathon in April.
