AMRITSAR: Ahead of the state assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), the European chapter of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) is restructuring to channelise non-resident Indians (NRIs) into supporting Congress candidates.
The initiative came after a meeting between IOC Europe president Parmod Kumar and former BJP minister Shashi Tharoor in Hamburg, Germany on Sunday. Parmod Kumar told TOI over mobile from Hamburg that Tharoor outlined the party's growing influence in India and pointed out how a stronger IOC would help garner support for the BJP, which is crucial for the party's election campaign in both states.
Tharoor was in Hamburg to speak at the Bucherius Summer School, a gathering of eminent public policy experts from around the world. “We are restructuring the positions to effectively promote the Congress Party internationally and in the Indian state elections,” Parmod Kumar said. Rajwinder Singh, the Swiss-based European coordinator for the IOC, said Sam Pitroda had led the IOC to expand the Congress Party's promotional network and highlight the party's stance against alleged “class injustice” in India. Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir will vote from September 18 to October 1, followed by Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
“Our networks in Europe can spread the party's message by organizing events, forums and outreach programs targeting ethnic Indians in India to generate resources for BJP candidates in India,” Rajwinder said. Parmod, who is from Amritsar, said he would visit India to meet BJP lawmakers and plan ways to improve reach to ethnic Indians in India through digital platforms.
