Omena Mensah took to social media to announce the death of her father, Opoku Ware-Mensah. “I lost one of the most important people in my life,” she wrote.
“My world was rocked to its foundations today,” Omenaa Mensah said on Instagram on the evening of January 3rd. The journalist and philanthropist announced the death of her father, cardiothoracic surgeon Opoku Ware-Mensah, on social media. “He was not only a father to me, but an inspiration and a force that moved me to action,” he said.
Omena Mensah wrote that his father “took an unusual path: from Ghana to Poland, where he came to study medicine as a young and ambitious man for a better tomorrow.” “It was here that he fell in love with my Polish mother and began their life together, which became the basis of my story,” he said.
“Life is not just what we lose”
“But today I don’t want to mourn this loss. Father taught me that life is not only what we lose, but above all what we give to others.” He added that his father had the idea throughout his life that one should “appreciate what is really important.”
“We often get lost in complaining about the small things of the day, when the world is not full of injustice, suffering, and compassion,” wrote Omenaa Mensah. In the entry, she noted that her father showed her “how to look at these problems with open eyes and act rationally” and taught her “how to really support change, especially in Africa, where is it from.”
“He was proud of the projects that my husband and I implemented together and always spoke warmly about Poland – the country that gave him the opportunity to grow and become one of the best surgeons,” she wrote.
His father used to say that “education is the key to change – the greatest power we can give to others”.
Mensah emphasized that he wants to “cultivate and develop the values and legacy that he was given.” “Today I bow to his life, work and ideas, which became mine.”
“Let the memory of my father remain forever in our hearts and in the actions we do every day,” she wrote at the end.
