The 2024 Paris Olympics has a packed schedule of events, including the men's basketball final between the USA and France on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET). But there's also plenty to do off the court: gold medals will be awarded in numerous track and field events, as well as wrestling, boxing and water polo. Before you make any final predictions on these or any other events Saturday at the 2024 Summer Olympics, you should hear from SportsLine Olympic Insider Mike Tierney.
Tierney is a national sports reporter who writes for The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times, and has covered nine Olympic Games in person. In Rio 2016, Tierney made a killing. He encouraged readers to bet on the number of gold medals the U.S. team would win (41.5) and the total number of medals the U.S. team would win (102.5). The results? 46 gold medals, 121 medals, and two easy cash wins. And in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Tierney got two of his three predictions right: Germany (+200) would win the most gold medals, and the U.S. (+110) would win just under 10.5 gold medals. Anyone who followed this made a huge profit.
Now, Tierney is breaking down the 2024 Olympics from every angle and revealing his best bets for Saturday, August 10. To see his 2024 Summer Olympics predictions, visit SportsLine now.
2024 Paris Olympics host cities announced on August 10th
Tierney predicts France to beat the United States by +16.5 points in the men's basketball final. Tierney also backed the underdog in the semifinals, telling SportsLine members to bet on Serbia +16.5, and not only was the score never in doubt, Tierney almost correctly predicted the overwhelming underdog to win. Serbia led by double digits for much of the second half and entered the fourth quarter with a 13-point lead. However, LeBron James and Stephen Curry spurred the fourth quarter and led the team to a 32-15 advantage in the final quarter on their way to a 95-91 victory.
Tierney told Sportsline that many bettors are seeing the semi-final result as a wake-up call and are predicting a big win for the US in the final, but he's not so sure. “In Tokyo, France beat the US in pool play and then lost by just five points in the final. A roaring home crowd could spur France on and keep them within the spread,” Tierney told Sportsline. See the rest of Tierney's predictions here.
