A thunderstorm occurred during a soccer match in Peru. A thunderclap struck the players as they tried to leave the pitch to escape the threat. One of them died on the spot, and the remaining five were taken to the hospital.
On Sunday afternoon, a regional competition between teams Juventud Bellavista and Familia Ciocca was held in Chilca, Huancayo Department, Peru. A thunderstorm broke out near the halfway point of the match, and the referee decided to stop the match.

However, before the players could reach the locker room, lightning struck where they had begun to gather. As a result of the direct hit, 39-year-old Jose Hugo de la Cruz Mesa died at the scene.

The force of the impact also knocked five other players to the ground, including 40-year-old goalkeeper Juan Ciocca Llacta, who was taken to hospital with severe burns.
The remaining injured – two teenagers aged 16 and 19 and a young man aged 24 – are also in hospital and are in “stable” condition.

Footage of the tragedy was posted on social media, with internet users calling for a more responsible approach when organizing outdoor events, especially those at high altitudes.
Commenting on the event, one of the officials stressed that “there is a need to introduce protection systems in sports facilities and safety protocols to immediately stop activities in the event of a storm.”

There was also a tragedy caused by thunderstorms last weekend. At least 14 people were killed and more than 30 injured when lightning struck a church in a South Sudanese refugee camp in Uganda.
Police said the victims ranged in age from 9 to 21, and were mostly children. Their nationalities have not been disclosed.
