WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – Here are some notable health news stories today.
Death from heatstroke
There has been an alarming increase in deaths from heatstroke over the past decade.
A new study finds that 412 heat-related deaths occurred in the United States in 2014, and more than 2,300 people died last year. The study found that heat-related deaths trended downward from 1999 to 2014, but then skyrocketed in the nine years since.
The researchers expect the increase to continue and say local governments in high-risk areas should invest in cooling centres for the general public.
Preventing physician burnout
To prevent burnout, physicians should rely on nonphysician collaborators to keep track of patients.
A University of Maryland study found that health care workers who use scribes and other collaborative mechanisms see 10% more patients.
Physicians who rely most on others reduced the time it takes to write notes by about 20%.
Complications of myocarditis
People who developed myocarditis due to COVID-19 had more complications than people who developed carditis due to the mRNA COVID vaccine.
French researchers studied 4,600 patients over an 18-month period.
Two percent of post-vaccination myocarditis patients required hospitalization for another heart-related problem, compared with 7% of post-COVID-19 myocarditis patients.
