This weekend, Cosmopolitan announced that “Swifties for Kamala” is mobilizing fans for the upcoming election, regardless of whether or not Taylor Swift endorses anyone. An Instagram account dedicated to the movement, @swifties4kamala, has garnered 44,000 followers.
But a different perspective emerged in the comments section of Cosmo's post, claiming that there are plenty of Swifties who support Trump. “Sorry, but Swifties support Trump,” commented a woman named Cynthia.
Another said: “Oh noooo. Don't join us this time. We're #swiftiesfortrump.”
Meanwhile, Donald Trump tweeted a photo of women wearing “Swifties for Trump” T-shirts and proudly captioned it, “I accept!” Mainstream media focused on how the former president used AI-generated images, completely ignoring the fact that many Swift fans support Trump.
Swift may appear liberal, but her fan base and connections suggest a more right-wing streak.
Is Taylor Swift Trump-Coded?
Even liberals consider Taylor Swift to be a closet Trump supporter. Of course, we're not saying she's a Trump supporter, but we can't ignore her connections to the right wing and those who appear to lean in that direction. Swift has kept a low profile in terms of politics this year, avoiding endorsements and remaining silent on major issues, although her father, Scott Swift, is a known Republican.
The documentary, “Taylor Swift: Miss Americana,” shows the then-30-year-old superstar clashing with her father and team over a lengthy social media post in support of the Democratic Party. To this day, Swift appears to have a close relationship with her father.
Swift and the Kennedys
Remember when Swift was dating Conor Kennedy, the eldest son of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Mary Kennedy?
Photos of the “Fortnite” singer and RFK recently resurfaced on X/Twitter, shortly after RFK publicly supported Trump.
In February 2012, Swift confessed to Vogue that Ethel Kennedy was one of the few people who ever truly captivated her. Swift, then 22, spoke glowingly of an afternoon spent with Ethel (now 96), recalling how the legendary Kennedy matriarch and her husband, Bobby, were always the life of the party. With 11 children and an estate filled with exotic animals, the Kennedys were the epitome of a glamorous and very unique American family.
Just a year earlier, Swift revealed that she had read “The Kennedy Women,” a 900-page book that traces the Kennedy family's roots back to the first Kennedy women who immigrated from Ireland in the 1800s. The red, white and blue frenzy didn't end there. Swift also picked up books on John Adams, Lincoln's cabinet, the Founding Fathers and Ellis Island. It's clear to me that Swift has a great interest in American figures who helped shape our country. As with her respect for the Kennedys, her connection to our national heritage is undeniable.
Travis Kelce
Swift's NFL star boyfriend, Travis Kelce, also exudes right-wing vibes. In a February 2023 episode of the podcast “New Heights” (co-hosted with his brother Jason), Travis joked that he needed to “start breeding” to have kids. The remark came during a light-hearted conversation with his mother, Donna, where Travis jokingly mentioned finding a “breeder” to start a family. Sounds right-wing to me! I don't think a man who identifies as liberal would jokingly call a woman a “breeder.”
Travis also liked an Instagram post featuring ESPN anchor Sage Steele alongside Trump, a photo that would likely have been ignored if he had voted Democratic. Travis's recent comments and social media activity have further reinforced the impression of his right-wing leanings, suggesting that Trump would have no problem visiting the White House with his Kansas City Chiefs teammates if he is re-elected in November.
Matty Healy
Swift briefly dated The 1975's Matty Healy, who is said to be associated with the “Dirtbag Left” movement, a group that criticizes the “woke left” and adopts a provocative, satirical political approach. In February 2023, Healy made headlines after appearing on the Dirtbag Left-affiliated comedy show The Adam Friedland Show.
Brittany Mahomes
Swift appears to maintain her friendship with Brittany Mahomes (wife of Patrick Mahomes) despite their recent controversy. On August 23, Brittany “liked” an Instagram post outlining Trump's 2024 presidential platform, including policies like fighting inflation, protecting free speech, and banning men from women's sports. Brittany drew fierce backlash from liberals, who accused her of being “privileged” and “misogynistic.”
In response, Brittany took to social media to defend herself, arguing that the criticism from the online mob reflected deeper personal issues rather than substantive disagreements.
Once again, Swift's relationship with Brittany Mahomes raises the question of how her personal relationships reflect her hidden conservative values.
Swift's fanbase
Are we really surprised that some women proudly post the hashtag #SwiftiesForTrump? When you think about it, Swift's persona blends traditional femininity with modern glamour, striking a balance that appeals to women on the right. Many Swift fans show up to her concerts wearing her trademark sparkly accessories, girly clothes and iconic cowboy boots, evoking a classic Americana image that contrasts with the more provocative style of some of her peers (see Katy Perry).
While some celebrities flaunt revealing outfits and bold political statements, Swift's style is elegant and very understated. This not only sets her apart from her more overtly liberal counterparts, but also attracts a fanbase that feels alienated by the more radical aspects of contemporary pop culture. So it's no wonder that Swift's traditional, feminine image resonates with conservative women, and that some of her fanbase aligns with right-wing sentiments; see the trend #SwiftiesForTrump for evidence of this.
Why is Taylor Swift getting so much attention?
Swift is currently in the spotlight more than ever thanks to her wildly successful The Eras Tour and recent Time magazine Person of the Year feature, and her high-profile relationship with Travis Kelce has only made headlines in 2024 after the Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl.
Swift's influence is undeniable. From endorsing Democratic candidates to rallying 35,000 fans to get them to register to vote in 2023, the singer's forays into politics have drawn praise and criticism. With millions of fans who follow her every word, it's no surprise that both political parties are using Swift as a weapon. She has the power to swing elections.
Conclusion
Taylor Swift may exude liberal vibes, but she's a capitalist to the core. Her entire brand is driven by sales: concert tickets, albums, limited edition merch, and never-ending digital editions of TTPD. Album releases and tour announcements are perfectly timed to keep the cash flowing. Swift's fans aren't just advocates, they're customers, and she knows how to keep them coming back. Yes, she's incredibly talented, gifted, and beautiful, but in an industry where artistry and commerce are often at odds, Swift has mastered the art of making both work to her advantage.
