The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) announced today that it will begin piloting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor for gun brandishings and alert security officers.
A 12-month, $200,000 contract was awarded to ZeroEyes, an AI firearm detection software company, to monitor multiple cameras across the rail system. ZeroEyes' technology is already being used to detect firearms at Navy Pier, school districts, businesses, government facilities and military bases.
“Crime incidents on this line are relatively rare, and CTA is proud to provide a safe and reliable transportation option for nearly one million riders per day,” CTA President Dorval R. Carter Jr. said in a press release. “We hope this additional protective measure will provide added peace of mind for everyone.”

Once identified by the software, images of suspect firearms are automatically sent to ZeroEyes for human review by a staff of military and law enforcement veterans. Chicago Police and CTA officials are then notified of the firearm image and its location, a process that CTA officials say typically takes less than a minute.
